Rock of Ages

Last weekend I saw the Rock of Ages show in Chicago. It seriously rocked.  My friend, Mike, and his wife, Laura, are among the producers of the show.  It's been a huge success on Broadway (5 Tony nominations) for over a year and is now touring.  The show is full of 80's rock performed by a top-notch band and fantastic singers and dancers.  The songs are cool, the talent and bodies are hot and the jokes are funny.  I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.    

Twitter beginnings

Well...I've been using Twitter for a few months now.  I find it interesting reading the tweets of those I follow (all 31 of them).  So far not many are interested in following me, though (9 followers).  Maybe I'm doing it wrong...maybe I need to be more patient...or maybe this is one way to find out I'm just not that interesting!  Oh well.  It doesn't bother me because I have my tweets set to automatically post to facebook...where friends comment, joke and otherwise show an interest.  Conclusion:  Facebook is for affirmation and sense of community...Twitter is for following interesting people (and pretending I'm one of them).    

Fun-a-day project

Heard on NPR today about the Fun-a-Day project that was a challenge to young artists in PA this past January. The challenge was for each artist to create a piece of artwork every day in the month of January.  Those participating would then submit those works for display in February.  I love this idea!

This has me thinking.  Could I challenge myself to do something similar?  I think I'd skip the display part.  But I love the idea of doing something creative for 31 days straight.  The Fun-a-Day project was in January as a way to fill the cold, winter days.  Hate to suggest any more procrastinating in my life, but January seems like a good time for it.  I think I see my first 2011 resolution forming.

Was checking out what I've written here in the past several months.  Really?  That's all I've had to say?  No wonder it says at the bottom of this blog "there are no followers."  Not all that interesting. : /

Goals

Seriously...it's time to get my middle in shape and organize my desks at work and at home.

There's so much I don't know...and I'm not much of a strategist.  We all have things at which we're experts (or nearly so), things about which we have an average understanding, things we really don't get at all...and many variations in between.  I'm ok with that, as long as I continue to learn.

Creative impulses

A friend of mine was reminiscing today about a time, years ago, when he felt compelled to draw and paint...and how long it's been since he's felt that.  I can relate to that.  What I miss is being absorbed in working on a piece and the high of succeeding in getting the results I wanted...looking at it and thinking *I* made that happen.  For me, something close to that feeling still can be found in my job, when it's going well and I'm accomplishing things I care about.  But I'd like to come full circle...let go of some of the compulsion to get things done and just let myself focus on something purely creative again...just for the joy of it.

Productivity

Work is crazy busy these days.  Everyone's up to their eyeballs in work, trying to figure out how we'll get it all done.   It's exciting!  Never a dull moment...all that stuff.  I'm stretching myself, getting things done but still have so much more to do.  I've never loved my job more.

System overload

How many more directions can I go at once?  And that's just at work!  Is someone out there just waiting for me to cry "uncle?"  If so...it's not happening.  (This is the part where I break into singing "I Will Survive")

Ready, set...go?

I've been thinking that it's time to stop procrastinating some things that need to be said and done...both at home and at work.  When I was a kid, I always thought grown-ups just automatically did everything they needed to.  Maybe subconsciously I'm still trying to resist growing up.  But having things nag your brain is exhausting and defeating.  Ready...set...go!

Wow. I can't believe it's been 8 months since I've posted anything here. High time I started again. I miss it. I've always enjoyed this as an outlet for my thoughts. No one reads this anyway...especially after such a long break. So...time to return to posting my thoughts and happenings here for my own enjoyment. It's definitely got something over Facebook.

I am "card correspondence challenged." Can't seem to get a handle on the sending of cards to properly acknowledge people and events. When I should send a nice thank you, get well, sympathy or birthday card I have the thought but then never get around to doing it. Email saves me on the birthday thing most of the time. But on the paper card front, I literally have about a 10% success rate. If you are one of those that I have snubbed in this way over the years, please don't take it personally. I am an equal opportunity snubber!

Jasper Clinic research study

It's been 6 weeks since I've posted here...I'm assuming there's no one reading this any more. But I'll post this anyway. I'm spending this week at the Jasper Clinic in Kalamazoo (part of the Bronson hospital system) doing a clinical research study on a migraine medication. No, I don't have migraines...I'm here for the money. Plus it's a nice break from the normal daily stress, if you don't mind needles or rooming with strangers...which I don't.

Jeffrey S. Gerwig, aged 40, of Grand Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 17, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a loving husband and father. Jeffrey was a graduate of Ravenna High School and Ferris State University and an active member of his church. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Mildred Gerwig; and grandmother, Phyllis McNitt. Surviving are his wife of 15 years, Jennifer; his sons, Bryan and Aaron; parents, Robert and Sally Gerwig; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Vickie Wakefield; grandparents, Claude and Ruth McNitt; his brothers, Monte (Amy) Gerwig, Todd (Irene) Gerwig, Rob (Rebekah) Gerwig; brothers-in-law, Shad (Baby) Wakefield, Adam (Suzanne) Wakefield; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Smashmouth - LIVE!

On August 18, after the Nascar Busch series race at the Michigan International Speedway, I got to see Smashmouth in concert! Got within about 15 feet of the stage! The crowd full of racing fans had been partying all day, so by the time of the concert it was an interesting group. For the record, I was *not* one of those going topless. Not sure how many there were true Smashmouth fans (like yours truly). Most seemed to be there because it was free after the race. But for me it was the best part of the day. I just hope Steve and the band could feel the vibe coming from where I was...singing along to every song. :)

Comments on atheism...

Really? No mysteries at all? There is nothing that exists anywhere that we humans can't completely explain?

Not so. There have been many who have pointed to evidence of God, many who address that very issue. Since none of us know everything there is to know, those who are atheists simply hold a belief that there is no God...regardless of evidence that might point someone toward belief in God.
